The When Parents Drink Seminar is part of the open programme of the Expert
Conference on Alcohol and Health 21-22 September 2009 in Stockholm organised by the Swedish Ministry of Health and Social Affairs in cooperation with the European Commissions Directorate General for Health and Consumers (DG SANCO)
All over the world children in families with alcohol problems are a large part of
the collateral damage of alcohol. These children are the most innocent and often invisible victims of the drinking of adults, in the largely accepted alcohol culture in most countries.
The seminar presents ways to cover these children’s need for specific help to handle their situation, both in their childhood and later in life by targeted, specialized and coordinated interventions.
The seminar however emphasise that to prevent children still being added to the victim’s waiting list for help, the overarching challenge of any society is to reduce the harmful drunken behaviour of parents, simply by reducing the overall alcohol consumption in the adult population.
